Love my City, Manage my Waste

Love my City, Manage my Waste

In February 2011, a 2-day event was organized by Daily Dump to understand various facets of community waste management and an opportunity to meet and learn from various practitioners and vendors in Bangalore. The event was supported by Citizen Matters as Event Partner and Apartment ADDA as RWA Outreach Partner.

Day 1 was inaugurated by Mr RK Misra, (Founder Change India and a keen and conscious citizen) through a symbolic gesture of adding fresh waste and cocopeat to the Daily Dump Community Composter!
Following the inauguration, was the session on Challenges for Large Flats to become Waste Mindful. Two insightful presentations made by Arathi Manay Yajaman of Brigade Millennium and Shalini Khanna Charles of Project Green Diamond set the tone for an interactive discussion. Members of the Brigade Group, architects and other interested citizens discussed and debated on the various challenges of retrofitting a waste management system in an existing building. The plea to builders and architects was also to ensure that space for waste management at the individual home level and the community level was allocated right at the design and planning stage.

The afternoon session of Day 1 focussed on Challenges for Leaf Litter in the Garden City. Dr Meenakshi Bharath of the Solid Waste Management Round Table shared her experience with managing large volumes of waste in Malleswaram through a pile method.
This was followed by a presentation and screening of a short film ‘save your leaves’ by Poonam where she also emphasised the underlying principle of Daily Dump’s efforts – to make waste visible, and to make waste beautiful. The Daily Dump bias to decentralised management of waste was further emphasised by the different designs of leaf composters for homes, streets, communities and institutions.

Day 2 was inaugurated by Mr Ramakanth, a Community Waste Management Hero of our city; whose energy and enthusiasm would put many youngsters to shame.
The first session on Day 2 was on Challenges to make Offices Waste Mindful saw presentations by Mr Anselm Rosario of the WASTE WISE TRUST and Ms Padma of SAAHAS. Both these Bangalore-based organisations have substantive experience in helping offices manage their waste at source.
The afternoon session on Challenges for Layouts to become Waste Mindful included presentations by the SADA ZERO team represented by Sumir Hinduja and Mr Dasarathi; Ms Hamsa Ravikiran from LIC Colony, Jayanagar and Ms Anjana Ghosh from Ferns Paradise. Despite the fact that all three presentations shared experiences about waste management in layouts, each was unique as the background and process was different.

The speakers generously shared their presentations to make it accessible to a larger section of society. The links to these presentations are as below.

We thank all the speakers and the participants who made the event a good learning and networking experience.

We hope this serves as another step forward to ensure communities in our city become more waste mindful.
