Composting is a process and although you don't need to completely immerse yourself in the activity, you need to keep some time to monitor what is happening to your waste.
1. Stir once in 3 days
Stirring is essential because composting happens in the presence of oxygen. A static pile smells.
2. Check for water content
The pile should not be too dry, nor too wet! (Arrey! life is all about balance is it not?!) When you turn the pile, it should glisten with dampness - this indicates appropriate water content. Add water if needed.
3. Keep healthy
All compost heaps, generate maggots. Add two tablespoons of neem cake powder three days after you begin composting and every 7 days thereafter. Spray lemon grass solution to keep away flies in the pile and around the pots. Add 3 tablespoons of red chili powder to all three units once a week and 3 tablespoons of baking soda to all three units once a week. The red chilli powder is for controlling the maggot population and the baking soda is to control the acidity of the pile.
4. Speed it up
Every 7 days add 2 teaspoon of an organic "culture" (we call it 'accelerator'). this hastens decomposition. Daily Dump sells one kind of culture. Cow dung or semi-composted material are also good accelerators..
