What does it mean to be a clone?

The term “Clone” applies to anybody who sets up a business of selling terracotta composters designed by Daily Dump in their locality. You become an official Daily Dump clone once you sign the “Attribution Licence” with Daily Dump. This entitles you to sell our designs while acknowledging Daily Dump in all your material. (see the licence)

Once you become a clone you get free knowledge and support from the “Clone” community and from Daily Dump. In return you will nurture and help create more “clones” in the region. (See Clone Presentation)

What are the problems I can encounter?

Things that can go wrong –

  • 1. You get a load of terracotta composters that are damaged.
Solution: If not too damaged – fix with m-seal and sell at discount
If too damaged – do not pay your potter

  • 2. You don’t like answering so many phone-calls. And the irritation is evident from your tone! This is a heavy phone call oriented business, we wish we could hire a call center but since no-one wants to pay for waste – the phone will be answered by you.
Solution: Hire an assistant to manage customers.

  • 3. You do not have servicing personnel organized and customers get upset.
You better not begin the business. Losing this customer goodwill is death to this business.
Solution: Talk to local rag pickers association and find out if you can partner with them for efficient servicing of the composters.Divide the business into a service component and selling products component – find another partner for servicing. Outsource servicing. Outsource delivery too. Charge for delivery.

So what does Daily Dump get from this whole clone thing?

Daily Dump gets to grow the practice of home composting through the clone network.

Daily Dump can do this by ensuring these champions have autonomy and are financially independent of Daily Dump. And in the future perhaps the clones can invest in the research that Daily Dump does to grow our collective expertise in this area.
