Helping you get started!

Understand the Terracotta Products and their workings and the Daily Dump project completely. (Study all the information on the site - Contact us for a meeting to clarify your doubts if any)
Write down your intention report – we have designed it so that it clarifies your own mind and helps you get focused (download the format). If you have to set up a new company – do so.
You can choose any legal format – from Proprietorship to Private Limited. Remember to check the Sales Tax requirements of your state. In Bangalore Terracotta and Organic materials are exempt from sales tax. It would be useful to get a sales tax registration done anyway.
Experience one cycle of composting yourself – become an expert. This is critical – because you must know the process before you can begin selling the idea to others.
Connect with some potters who make large pots near your city. Alternatively, if you are at Bangalore, you can visit Palamner – it’s a 3 hour journey from Bangalore (Drive down Highway 4 towards Tirupati and you hit Palamner. You can’t miss it since the potters line the roadside with their terracotta elephants, pots, bells, etc)
Ask your potters to make the first prototypes using the (drawings here download). Some potters prefer to make a product from an existing sample. You then need to buy an extra product from us and give it to the potter to replicate.

If you are working with Ramakrishnappa of Palamner – then you just need to tell him the numbers you need. He already has the catalogue and measurements.
If you cannot develop local potters initially – you can buy a load of assorted pots from us. Depending on where in the country you are located, we will give you a quote.

Hire 2 young people to help you with the business (mixing, carrying, turning compost is hard work)

Train them how to deal with customers and how to manage composting and how to prepare the products for sale. (Preparation for the products for sale is an important aspect).

A visual step by step process is shown here

a. Line up the Unit C (bottom unit of each Kambha)
b. Prepare cement slurry
c. Coat the bottom of Unit C with a layer of cement.
d. Leave to dry

e. Put in a bed of dried leaves into Unit C.
f. The layer should be around 4 inches thick to be able to absorb the leechate generated.
(Note – you need to put cement and leaves in every Leave-It Pot / Patta Kambha too)

g. Put Unit B (middle unit) onto the Unit C and cut a sheet of newspaper – 2 layers to fit inside.
h. Put the newspaper on the Plastic Rope mesh.
i. Repeat for Unit A (top units)

Now your Kambha is ready for sale - Unt A & B have a newspaper and Unit C has a
bed of dried leaves!

Location / Space: Do you need to hire some space to store the load of pots? Or will your home do? Check this out.
Each Kambha needs an area of 14” x 14” square and each Leave-it Pot needs 18” x 18” square area. A full load usually has around 150 Kambhas and 50 Leave-it-Pots. You can order part loads.(Transportation becomes higher in this case)
You need to also have a demonstration area clearly marked out – with a working composter to show potential customers how things work. This is critical.
Customers need proof to assure them that it’s not a “waste” of their time!!
Your tools and storage section for accessories, tools and sieved compost must look professional and fun.
Order your user handbook / product handbook copies from Daily Dump or order a CD which has the print ready files for you to print. Each product that you sell has a handbook that goes with it. We find customers appreciate the information to refer to over time.
Get your aprons stitched (download drawing if you want the Daily Dump design) .
Or order them from Daily Dump.

Look at our supplier list – and get familiar with all the different things you need to stock and work with. You can also buy this material from Daily Dump if you do not want to source the different items yourself.

Print all your forms – like invoices/ customer data base forms / service contract forms/ stock registers / etc (download samples)

Buy or Print the Brochures. Again you can buy a CD containing the print files.

Paint your car with your own logo or make a sticker and stick that on.

Buy and equip your business with the material list that is downloadable here.

Get your demo kit ready – it should have containers that can hold three stages
of waste – fresh waste, half done waste and done sieved waste. Also your posters and banners you must take along with the products and accessories. Have a format where you can record the enquires to follow up on later.

Start selling the products. You can even sell to existing shops that support sustainability and local enterprise.

Contact a local club where you can give a demonstration, talk to potential buyers, stand at street corners and distribute flyers! We charge a fee for doing a demo – you can decide if you want to do that.

Sell the service plans (our experience is that this product will work and get you repeat customers only when people are helped in composting – and that’s the value you add – by making sure that they feel like they are successful composters)
See our service plan formats.

Maintain your accounts and check if you have made any money at the end of the month.

If you have made a little money and you have enjoyed the process – write in and tell us. We plan to have a party once a year of all the “clones”!.
